Jurgen Klopp breaks silence on Liverpool takeover talk after EFL Cup drama

Liverpool needed penalties to beat Derby County in the EFL Cup, after which Jurgen Klopp confirmed that he’d be staying as Reds boss after the club went up for sale this week

Liverpool edged through to the fourth round of the EFL Cup to add to a dramatic week of events at Anfield.

On Monday, it was announced by Fenway Sport Group that the club was up for sale. Via the Athletic, a statement read: “There have been a number of recent changes of ownership and rumours of changes in ownership at English Premier League clubs and inevitably we are asked regularly about Fenway Sports Group’s ownership in Liverpool.”

“FSG has frequently received expressions of interest from third parties seeking to become shareholders in Liverpool. FSG has said before that under the right terms and conditions we would consider new shareholders if it was in the best interests of Liverpool as a club. FSG remains fully committed to the success of Liverpool, both on and off the pitch.”

But when Derby County came to Merseyside on Wednesday, the Reds were looking for goals rather than bidders. Fortunately, Jurgen Klopp ‘s men made it through following a nervy 0-0 draw after 90 minutes, thanks to a penalty shoot-out victory and the brilliance of Caoimhin Kelleher.
