SNP forced to admit its figures on Scotland’s potential offshore wind power are false

Allegations of nationalists misleading voters with inaccurate statistics continue to stack up in a blow to economic case for independence

SNP ministers have been forced to admit their repeated claim that Scotland has a quarter of Europe’s potential offshore wind power is false in a major blow to their economic case for independence.

The Scottish Government said the 25 per cent figure was wrong and needed updating as allegations of the nationalists misleading voters with inaccurate statistics continued to stack up.

A Freedom of Information request by think tank These Islands disclosed that their civil servants had concerns about its accuracy more than two years ago, with officials stating in October 2020 that it had “proved very difficult to source”.

Internal Scottish government correspondence showed an official warned that the 25 per cent estimate has “never, to my knowledge, been properly sourced”.
