McDonald’s customers furious as fast food giant announces ban

McDonald’s fans are angry that the fast food chain is bringing a major change to its restaurants (Image: GETTY)McDonald’s has announced that it will be getting rid of all its plastic cutlery in UK restaurants. The fast food giant will be replacing them with paper versions in a bid to be more environmentally friendly, but not all customers are happy. The new cutlery is made from renewable, Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified pressed-paper, which is better for the environment than plastic. The move is part of McDonald’s plans to reduce its use of single-use plastic.Nina Prichard, head of sustainable and ethical sourcing at McDonald’s, commented on the change, saying: “As a business, we’re committed to taking action on packaging and waste and increasing our use of sustainable materials.”We’re pleased to announce another step forward in eliminating single-use plastics and it’s great to be switching our famous McFlurry spoons to this new paper-based material.”READ MORE: Queen gifted three royal brides tiaras – but Kate & Meghan missed out Many customers noted that McDonald’s paper straws don’t work (Image: GETTY)However, not everyone is happy with McDonald’s attempt at being more environmentally conscious.Customers have taken to social media to express their disappointment and anger. Holly wrote on Twitter: “Eating with your hands would be more successful than paper cutlery. Their paper straws are beyond a joke and fall apart whilst using them. Just use a lid with a hole to sip your drinks instead.”As for paper cutlery, I’d be more inclined to keep a proper set in the car if I knew the alternative was paper.”Jeff commented: “Paper straws don’t work why should forks and knives?”DON’T MISS:King Charles’ reign ‘won’t be long’ as he prioritises something else [ASTROLOGY]Zara Tindall stays in good shape by avoiding breakfast foods [DIET]Zara’s ‘biggest worry’ is Mike’s eating habits – must ‘watch his diet’ [WEIGHT LOSS]Daisy wrote: “Great move for a more sustainable world! any idea when you will be integrating paper based materials in other countries like the US? The spoons are actually pretty structurally sound, I used one today in a McFlurry. You all want eco friendly stuff but moan when it happens? Grow up, it’s just cutlery from a take out.”McDonald’s confirmed the news on Twitter yesterday, November 8, saying: “We’re making a big change. That’s right, we’re cancelling plastic cutlery and replacing it with a new sustainable, paper-based material in all of our restaurants in the UK & Ireland.”We’re doing this to remove over 850 tonnes of plastic from our supply chain a year, as part of our Plan for Change.”
