Cricketer charged with sexual assault ‘choked woman three times’, police allege

Police documents allege that Sri Lanka batter Danushka Gunathilaka raped a 29-year-old woman four times after matching with her on Tinder and meeting up in Sydney during the T20 World Cup

Sri Lankan cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka, who has been arrested and charged with four counts of rape, has been accused of choking a 29-year-old woman three times and leaving her “fearing for her life”.

Gunathilaka was in Australia for the T20 World Cup, where he played one game for Sri Lanka before suffering a hamstring tear. New South Wales police arrested the 31-year-old at the team hotel shortly after their defeat to England and a court suppression order has now been lifted after he was denied bail after police argued he could flee the country.

According to the police facts sheet New South Wales police filed with the local court, Gunathilaka matched with the woman on Tinder on October 29 and they agreed to meet in Sydney on November 2.

After having drinks and dinner, they went to the woman’s house where Gunathilaka is alleged to have had “forceful” sexual intercourse with her, choked her three times and refused to wear a condom.
