Twitter to add new ‘official’ check mark for public figures

Twitter has announced a new “official” check mark that will be given to accounts of governments, companies, media outlets and public figures in an apparent climbdown by Elon Musk.

The grey label is another layer of verification on top of the new paid-for $8 “Twitter Blue” tick that is being introduced this week, but cannot be purchased and will be authorised only by the company.

“A lot of folks have asked about how you’ll be able to distinguish between @TwitterBlue subscribers with blue checkmarks and accounts that are verified as official, which is why we’re introducing the ‘Official’ label to select accounts when we launch,” said Esther Crawford, a product manager in charge of the project.
