‘Youthquake’ boosts Biden as under-30s hold off Republican surge

Support from the young and the issue of abortion have unexpectedly boosted Democrat fortunes in the US midterms

A Gen Z ‘youthquake’ appears to have boosted Democrat fortunes in the 2022 US midterms, with the party’s voters energised by the issue of abortion.

Democrat support among young voters has surged in key races relative to 2020, suggesting that age group has been key in holding back the ‘Red Wave’ many Republicans had expected going into the vote.

It means that it is increasingly likely that Joe Biden’s party will hold on to the Senate, giving a pensioner President propped up by the young greater power to enact his agenda over the next two years.

Across the entire contest for the House of Representatives, Democrats increased their lead among under 30s from 26 percentage points in 2020 to 28 percentage points, according to a CNN exit poll.
