England captain Lawes suffers setback as Eddie Jones expresses health worry

Eddie Jones is resigned to going without Courtney Lawes for the autumn internationals and the England captain may not return to the fold until the 2023 Six Nations

England coach Eddie Jones is ‘worried’ about the health of his skipper Courtney Lawes and is now resigned to losing the flanker for the entire autumn campaign.

Lawes has not played since sustaining a head injury for Northampton Saints in September and his return date still remains unclear. The 33-year-old has been left out of the 36-player squad to take on Japan this weekend as England aim to bounce back from a humbling defeat to Argentina.

And Lawes will not feature again until he passes the stages of the return-to-play concussion protocols with Northampton. The Telegraph notes that Lawes has suffered another setback in his recovery after showing symptoms of concussion during a contact training session with the Saints.

That meant Lawes has moved back to the earlier stage of his protocol, focusing on gym work and training exercises which are contact-free. The England captain’s head injury is particularly concerning given he already spent six weeks out with a similar problem before this year’s Six Nations.
