Uefa mocks lack of European Super League backers after meeting with rebel group

The organisation agreed to meet A22 at its Nyon headquarters despite their filing a case against Uefa’s refusal to sanction the competition

Uefa has mocked those behind plans to resurrect the Super League by accusing them of having as many backers “as the UK has had Prime Ministers in the last two months”.

In a tit-for-tat public spat following a meeting between A22 Sports Management – which represents what remains of a venture that retains declarations of support only from Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus – European football’s governing body poured scorn on the vision laid out by the rebel group.

Uefa accepted an invitation to meet A22 at its Nyon headquarters despite the company having filed a case against its refusal to sanction the breakaway competition with the Court of Justice of the European Union.

The governing body – which also invited senior figures from clubs, leagues and supporter groups to attend the summit – and A22 both published accounts of the meeting afterwards.
