England host Japan on the back of a 30-29 loss to Argentina, their fifth defeat in nine Tests this year
Eddie Jones does not expect to pick Courtney Lawes for England until at least next year’s Six Nations and admits that he is concerned for the health of the 33-year-old back-rower.
Lawes, who captained England to a 2-1 series victory over Australia in July, has only managed 50 minutes on the field so far this season. He returned for Northampton Saints in a Premiership match against Leicester Tigers at the end of September but was forced off the field early in the second half and failed a head injury assessment (HIA).
Some six weeks on, Lawes is yet to play again. It is understood that he has subsequently attempted to return to contact training with his club, only to experience a recurrence of concussive symptoms. There is no rush to reintegrate Lawes as England finish 2022 with matches against Japan, New Zealand and South Africa.
Jones appeared to confirm as much as he also suggested that both Raffi Quirke, the Sale Sharks scrum-half, and Henry Arundell, the London Irish wing, will also miss the remainder of the autumn.
