Another passenger captured the snack on camera, sparking debate in China. Some found the behaviour shocking, while others were more sympathetic.China has strict rules around mask wearing as part of its zero-covid mission. Eating and drinking on the subway was banned in 2019 – before the covid pandemic.The footage was captured by a fellow passenger called Wang, who said he thought the woman’s actions seemed a bit over the topSouth China Morning Post quoted him as saying: ‘There are sporadic coronavirus outbreaks across Wuhan, but in my opinion, it is a bit extreme for this woman to protect herself like this.’Wuhan, the Chinese city where coronavirus was first detected, was locked down again at the end of October, after reporting 20 to 25 new daily infections. The video of the woman on the subway was taken on October 31. Most passengers on the train seemed not to pay much attention to the woman. I cannot figure out why she wore such a large plastic bag.’Another wrote: ‘Is she unaware that people cannot eat on the subway? Her behaviour would be despised by anyone.’But others speculated that she may have had a medical condition. One sympathetic person wrote: ‘I think she was experiencing low blood sugar. She put herself in the plastic bag and ate a banana inside it, so she wouldn’t affect other people.
