Marcus Smith is future superstar, but Owen Farrell is the better fly half, says Warren Gatland

Warren Gatland has suggested that Eddie Jones should drop Marcus Smith and move Owen Farrell to fly half for this Saturday’s match against Japan.

The 59-year-old – who won three Six Nations grand slams as Wales coach and led the British & Irish Lions on three occasions – believes that Smith is a “long-term prospect” but that England could be better served by starting Farrell at No 10 for the rest of the autumn, with a centre partnership of Manu Tuilagi and Henry Slade.

In the 30-29 defeat by Argentina on Sunday, Smith started at fly half, with Farrell playing off him at inside centre. England face Japan on Saturday, before Tests against New Zealand and South Africa on consecutive weekends.
