Beijing officials are said to have welded shut the gates to the woman's residential building from the outside to stop people from leaving. The woman's mother, known as Mrs Wang, suffered from anxiety and had allegedly been on prescription meds since 2019. Her daughter told the building's management that her mum was having a mental breakdown and begged for help. When she asked the building supervisor to call the emergency helpline, he told her to "call them yourself, I'm busy," What's on Weibo reported. When no one came, Mrs Wang is said to have jumped from her bedroom window on November 4. A recording of the 29-year-old's distressed calls for help has gone viral on Weibo, China's version of WhatsApp. She can be heard banging on the gate and pleading with officials to unseal her mother's door and help her. "Open the gate, open the gate! I'm begging you, please," the young woman is heard shouting. When the gates finally open, the woman rushes over to her mother's body, where first responders meet them.
