Woman turned away by doctors after swallowing ‘deadly mango’ seed

The 57-year-old has surgery to remove pip that pierced her throat, days after medics claimed they found nothing wrong

A woman who ate a “potentially deadly mango” was left needing urgent surgery after a sliver of the fruit’s pip pierced her throat.

An investigation into the incident at Epsom Hospital, Surrey, found the 57-year-old woman, who has not been named, had first sought help from the emergency department saying she was having trouble swallowing after eating mango pickle.

However, she was sent home after a doctor looked at her and could not see anything obviously wrong.

The woman was reported to not be drooling and to still be able to swallow, while no “foreign body” visible on examination, the investigation was told.
