Joe Marchant to swap Harlequins for Stade Francais at end of Premiership season

Marchant has not featured for England since the first Test of the summer tour of Australia

The Premiership exodus will continue with the news that centre Joe Marchant is set to leave Harlequins for Stade Francais at the end of the season.

Marchant, 25, has been left out of Eddie Jones’ squad for the autumn internationals and will move to the French capital after eight years with Harlequins, which included a “secondment” season in Super Rugby with the Blues. Eddie Jones dropped the Harlequins centre after the first Test on the summer tour of Australia and Marchant has not featured since.

As with England team-mate Sam Simmonds, however, Marchant’s move would ensure his eligibility for next year’s World Cup, although the move to Paris would rule him out of international availability post-France 2023.

A Rugby Football Union spokesperson confirmed to Telegraph Sport that, if a current English-qualified player signs with an overseas club from July 1, 2023 – for the 2023/24 season – but does not play or train with their new club until after the conclusion of the World Cup, then they shall remain eligible for England selection at the World Cup, but will no longer be available immediately after. Any player who is named in the wider World Cup squad who is released to their overseas club may be called back in as an injury replacement. However, a player who has not been in the initial World Cup squad will be unavailable, even as an injury replacement, if he is contracted to an overseas club.
