Rugby League World Cup: Tommy Makinson scores five tries to take England through to semi-finals

Belief is growing. Momentum is building. And the case for England to be considered as serious World Cup contenders is beginning to look compelling.

Shaun Wane’s men had scored 34 tries and racked up 196 points in three group-stage romps against Samoa, France and Greece.

Papua New Guinea, a ferociously-proud rugby league-obsessed nation who comprehensively beat Great Britain three years ago, were supposed to provide a serious test to England in this quarter-final.

They did not. England, self-belief, energy and a collective desire coursing through their veins, were 38-0 up and in total control at half-time.

It was the least they deserved for their stunning superiority and now they can look forward to a semi-final at the Emirates against Samoa or Tonga next Saturday.
