Five-star Tommy Makinson the hero as England thrash Papua New Guinea to reach last four

Shaun Wane’s men raced into a 38-0 half-time lead and will face either Samoa or Tonga for a place in the World Cup final

Tommy Makinson seized centre stage with a five-try haul as England annihilated Papua New Guinea to advance to a World Cup semi-final against either Samoa or Tonga.

Watched by The Princess of Wales, who attended her first match since succeeding the Duke of Sussex as patron of the Rugby Football League, Shaun Wane’s men raced into a 38-0 interval lead with seven tries.

Makinson, a Wiganer who plays for serial title winners St Helens, claimed a first-half hat-trick and then added to his tally with two second-half scores, while also weighing in with five conversions to claim an overall personal points tally of 30.

Last week, it was Dom Young who scored four tries in the romp over Greece but, after three comprehensive group-stage wins, Papua New Guinea were supposed to give England a serious test.
