Scotland v Fiji: Scotland avoid upset but limp display fails to get pulses racing

Banana skin avoided but with no great elegance or conviction. Scotland toyed with turning this into a disaster but showed enough either side of half-time to bring the game to heel. Defeat was unthinkable – not least with New Zealand due here next Sunday – yet for most of the first half, Fiji more than held their own and really ought to have secured greater returns for their dominance of territory and possession.

It will have pleased Gregor Townsend to see his men display resilience, and odd flashes of flair, but Murrayfield had a right to expect more, especially with the strength of side the hosts were able to send out. Their biggest names and threats impressed only sporadically, and the whole felt a tad
