New York on the verge of electing Republican governor as rise in crime tops voters’ concerns

Democrat Kathy Hochul’s lead over GOP contender Lee Zeldin has fallen as critics say she has failed to read the mood of the electorate

Walking from a subway station in the upmarket Chelsea neighbourhood of Manhattan, Sarah Feinberg felt the sudden white-hot heat of a punch on her cheek.

Her attacker had been walking the wrong way down a bike lane when he turned around and struck Ms Feinberg flush across the face. “There’s just far, far too much of these kinds of attacks – and much more serious ones – happening these days,” she told The Post.

The irony of the assault was not lost on Ms Feinberg, who until very recently had served as president of the New York City Transit Authority. The 45-year-old promptly called 911, but the police never showed up.

News of the attack made headlines in the New York papers last week just days out from the all-important midterm elections when public safety is expected to be foremost on voters’ minds.
