Now is the time to settle on combinations and allow players the chance to become a proper, settled team before France 2023
Scotland’s 1990 Grand Slam team were a wonderful group to work with.
There were big characters in there – Gavin Hastings, David Sole, Finlay Calder, John Jeffrey. But that team did not come together overnight.
It was forged in 1986-87, becoming a tight-knit unit over time. It was only really Gary Armstrong and Craig Chalmers who arrived later, adding a new dynamic at half-back.
The crucial thing is that by 1990 there was consistency and continuity in the squad. Everyone knew his role. And perhaps just as crucially, knew his team-mates’ roles.
