Benefit claimants could get £1,500 in back pay if appeal succeeds

Britons could be due £1,500 in back payments if the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) loses a court case on whether it was fair to exclude some people from the £20-a-week universal credit uplift scheme during the COVID-19 pandemic.In February, the legal team representing four legacy benefits claimants lost a High Court challenge over the £20 uplift, but in August they announced that an application to appeal the ruling had been successful.The update from William Ford KC of Osbornes Law was good news for the more than two million people on older-style benefits.If the appeal is successful, the four claimants could be awarded over £1,500 in backdated payments and it could set a precedent for the two million people who rely on income Based Jobseekers Allowance, Income Related Employment and Support Allowance, Income Support, Housing Benefit, Child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit.READ MORE: Millions due financial help towards their winter energy bills
