Hurrah for the new age of well-dressed men on TV

The best place to get some new wardrobe inspiration these days is on a small screen near you

Back in the day, a whole generation of young men were inspired by the debonair black suits in The Saint, The Avengers and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Even The Good Life’s Jerry Leadbetter’s soft palette of polo necks had a certain panache. Save Frasier in the nineties and Mad Men’s Don Draper in the noughties, there’s been a dearth of stylish men on TV.

Until along came Peaky Blinders inspiring a generation of young men to try out some tweed and don a flat cap. Not to mention Succession with its stylish power players in four figure designer suits. TV dramas have clearly upped their game and as a result your average man is more likely to take inspiration from the sharp suits of Industry than they are of what’s on the Paris catwalk.

Now that it’s autumn and the TV big guns are rolled out as we hunker down, this year more than ever, there’s a glut of stylish men to take a cue from. Here’s some of my favourites.

The slow menace of this Ryan Murphy series about a wholesome couple who discover life’s not all white picket fences, is offset by the couple’s rather magnificent wardrobe. Dean Brannock and his wife Nora, played by Bobby Cannavale and Naomi Watts, waft around in a softly-softly wardrobe of taupes, fawns, creams and caramels. All those soothing cashmeres and suedes only makes the horror of their domestic situation all the more strange.
