Craig Mackinlay tells Chopper’s Politics podcast that Conservatives risk losing dozens of seats unless ministers take action over crossings
The Conservatives risk losing “dozens” of seats at the next general election if ministers do not take action over the migrants’ crisis because of the threat of a new Ukip-style party, a senior Tory has said.
Craig Mackinlay, MP for South Thanet, in Kent, who sits on the board of the European Research Group of Conservative MPs in Parliament, warned that a Nigel Farage-style party could pick up votes from Tory voters frustrated about government inaction.
He told Friday’s Chopper’s Politics podcast: “Unless we get this solved to people’s satisfaction, my real worry is that we could see some sort of challenger Right of centre party coming forward, nicking a few of our votes.”
Mr Mackinlay, one of the original founders of the UK Independence Party more than 30 years ago, said that for the Tories “literally dozens” of seats – “enough to lose the majority” – are now at risk.
