Chelsea boss Potter told to sign left-back as duo ‘not good enough’

Chelsea have been tipped to sign a new left wing-back in January following a hamstring injury to Ben Chiwell in the Blues’ 2-1 Champions League victory over Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday. There are fears that the England defender could be set to miss the World Cup as he was tearful leaving the Stamford Bridge pitch in the win, and is set to discover the extent of the injury when his scan results return.Chelsea spent £63million to bring Marc Cucurella to the club as competition for Chilwell, though he can also play in the back three. The Spaniard has had a mixed start at Stamford Bridge, but could have a chance to cement his place as a wing-back following Chilwell’s injury.Former Manchester United and Blues midfielder Paul Parker has, however, claimed that both players do not suit Potter and urged the club to bring in another left wing-back. ‘Both Cucurella and Ben Chilwell are much better as a full-back than a wing-back,’ Parker told BeMyBet.’So I don’t really see them fit perfectly into how Graham Potter wants to play. So, I’m absolutely sure that Chelsea will go on the market and try to find a new wing-back that will suit Potter’s way of playing. He needs players for the wing-backs who are masters at attacking and none of the left-sided wing-backs does that in Chelsea.’Marcos Alonso wasn’t a good defender but as a wingback, there was a spell where he was maybe one the best in the country and Europe because he ended up in some unbelievable goal-scoring positions. I think he would have suited him much better because he was one of them. His ball retention was very, very good and Graham Potter likes that as well.’DON’T MISS…Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell tearful as injury jeopardises World Cup spotArsenal’s Arteta responds to Barcelona ‘marking him’ as Xavi successorLiverpool boss Klopp has Jude Bellingham ‘agreement’ with FSG Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell pulled up with a hamstring injury.
