20mph limits for almost half the population

Close to half of Britons live in places where 20mph limits are in force or are expected, campaigners said as Wales introduced the limit in built-up areas.

The scheme to reduce the default speed limit for residential areas from 30mph came into force yesterday, affecting 7,700 miles of road. Conservatives said that the plans were “anti-worker, anti-road and anti-motorist”, but Welsh Labour ministers said that it would cut pollution and save lives.

The scheme meant changing 30,000 road signs but a consultation found that more people were against the new limit than in support of it.
