10 disasters that showed fall of out-of-touch Rishi Sunak after family tax fiasco

The PM loves to present himself as a man-of-the-people in a carefully manicured PR image. But after he was revealed as a US Green Card holder and his non-dom wife made a screeching U-turn over her tax, the sheen began to fade

Rishi Sunak previously found himself in the firing line after news of his wife’s tax-reducing status emerged on the day he hiked national insurance for millions of Brits.

At the time, the PM accused Labour of a smear campaign against his wife Askhata Murty, whose non-domiciled status which means she does not have to pay UK tax on overseas income.

Ms Murty paid £30,000 a year to the UK Government to keep her non-dom status, which is legal and expires after 15 years of being resident in Britain. She staged a late Friday night U-turn and said she will now pay UK tax on overseas income.

The row focused attention on the couple’s significant wealth and raised questions about whether Mr Sunak understands the challenges ordinary families are facing.
